Love Is A Verb is an examination of a social movement of Sufi inspired Muslims that began in Turkey in the 1960s and now reaches across the globe. The group is called Hizmet, the Turkish word for service or The Gulen Movement after its inspiration, leader and beloved teacher Fethullah Gulen, a man that Time Magazine named as one of the most influential leaders in the world in 2013. As it is explained to us in the film by Marcia Hermansen, Director of the Islamic World Studies, Loyola University of Chicago: “This movement is not about individual enlightenment, this is about making the world a better place. But while making the world a better place, at the same time, this altruism is also transformative.”

Who is Fethullah Gulen ?

Mr. Fethullah Gülen is a Turkish-Muslim scholar, writer and advocate of peace. He is considered by many to be one of the world’s most influential religious thinkers. His humanitarian activism has inspired a social movement known as the Hizmet Movement or also called the Gulen Movement. He is noted for his views on pro-democracy,science, dialogue and anti-violence position. In 2008, Gülen ranked #1 in the poll of the “Top 100 Public Intellectuals” by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines. Gülen had a personal audience with the late Pope John Paul II in 1996 in recognition of his contributions to interfaith understanding. He has been praised by the former U.S. president, Bill Clinton, for his contribution to mutual understanding and has received many awards for his advocacy and dialogue projects.

In 2013 he was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College awarded its prestigious 2015 Gandhi King Ikeda Peace Awarded Fethullah Gulen in recognition of his life-long dedication to promoting peace and human rights.

Fethullah Gulen, Criteria or Lights of the Way. London: Trustar

“…The goal of religion is to establish peace based on universal human rights, rule of law and high human values in the world. Any interpretations to the contrary, including the abuse of religion to help fuel conflicts, are either false or deceitful. In true Islamic thought based on its core principles, every mean to a legitimate end should also be legitimate itself. To think or act otherwise is nothing but Machiavellism…”

Mr. Gulen’s recent article published on French newspaper Le Monde ” Muslims, we have to critically review our understanding of Islam”: http://www.lemonde.fr/idees/article/2015/12/17/musulmans-procedons-a-un-…

“Be so tolerant that your bosom becomes wide like the ocean. Become inspired with faith and love of human beings. Let there be no troubled souls to whom you do not offer a hand and about whom you remain unconcerned.”
